Shortly after 4:00 am on July 24, 2015 the Plattsburgh Police Department received two 911 calls reporting an altercation on Clinton St. Responding patrols located a group of people in the area of Clinton and Oak St who stated that they saw a man wearing a red bandana over his face, carrying a stick, pounding on doors and windows of buildings located along Clinton St.
A description was broadcast and officers began searching the area. At about the same time, 19 year old Joshua Forster came out of his Clinton St apartment and reported to officers that a man wearing a red bandana over his face assaulted him with a stick and demanded his cell phone. The man hit Forster several times in the face with the stick then fled the area on foot without the phone.
As patrols searched, other witnesses reported seeing a man fitting the description headed south on South Catherine then moments later running across Broad St towards Couch St where he was spotted by a patrol and apprehended. The man was identified as Keith R. Bassett, age 33 of Plattsburgh and charged with the following crimes:
• Robbery in the First Degree, a class B Felony
• Assault in the Second Degree, a class D Felony
• Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the 3rd Degree, a class D Felony
Bassett is currently being held in the Plattsburgh PD lockup awaiting arraignment in Plattsburgh City Court.
Joshua Forster’s injuries consisted of contusions to the face and neck area. He did not seek medical treatment.
